Rubble

So, where do we end up
With so little left;
When our tower was built by sheer willpower,
Sheer stupidity?
Simple delusion in a whirlwind
Of wanting things that didn’t exist in us.
We threw pebbles at boulders,
Smashed fists into dust,
And your apology was carved into marble...
Pretty - all a show.
Meticulously made by stable hands.
Sturdy hands to shatter what’s meant to be unbreakable.
I’m a rock - stoic and unmoving,
But you tore through me like paper.
Wore me down to something small and unrecognizable.
Tell me, through gritted teeth,
What’s left of us
Except minuscule pieces of something we thought was perfect, once?
Casting stones. Pummeled;
Ground into ash.
Lit aflame.
Some parts irreplaceable. Irreparable.
Indestructive,
We thought.
Some things are better left unsaid, hindsight says,
Some things are better left
In ruin.
